REPRESENTATION
Zoella presents herself as friendly and cheerful and a little bit awkward. She seems to be aiming for a 'relatable older sister' persona to match her target audience. She has quite an excited tone, but she isn't overdoing it or yelling into the camera. This creates a relaxed and natural atmosphere that appeals to the target audience because it feels quite personable. The audience wants to feel a connection to the youtuber behind the screen. Zoella further reinforces her casual and personable image by her mise en scène. She chooses to film in her bedroom, which is a comfortable, 'intimate' environment. She uses mostly natural lighting or soft lighting to convey brightness or openness. Many admire her for her entrepreneurial success, and how she embraces beauty and feminism simultaneously. However, critics see how Zoella sometimes plays up the female stereotype of beauty being important, leading them to question the sincerity of her other message - that girls should be accepting of themselves and not worry about how they look. |
AUDIENCE
I initially thought that Zoella's audience would be young teenage or pre-teen girls, as most of her videos feature themes like in her video (right) relating to growing up problems etc. that would relate to a younger audience. However, she claims most of her audience are adults over 18, which is plausible since her merchandise, which is very popular, is also kind of expensive. So generally only adults who are earning money of their own would be able to support this. This is probably going to be a secondary audience that has been following her since they were young and grown up with her, whereas new viewers would be younger girls. That being said, many viewers lose interest in her as they get older eg. 15. and they can't relate to her subject matter anymore. |

originally I had a hard time coming up with what I wanted to do.

CHARACTER: a wildlife explorer, kind of, but a bad one. My costume was a straw hat a vest and a hedgehog stuffed animal, because I was trying to appeal to children (?) I also tried to speak in a calm informative tone
NARRATIVE: I didn't think about the theory when I was filming, and I don't really think it follows any narrative since it's more informative than story based AUDIENCE: children who are likely to watch documentaries / cute dogs. However I'm not sure if I properly appealed to them |
