CODES AND CONVENTIONS
(MASTHEAD) The brand is located right at the top of the magazine. It is printed in a bright pink font that contrasts against the dull background. This font is tall and slim like catwalk models, matching the branding of Tatler as a high fashion magazine. It is used for all Tatler Mastheads and throughout the inside of the magazine as well. The font is so large that it covers the entire top portion of the magazine, showing how the Tatler brand and status is as much a part in selling the magazine to its target audience of aspirers as the actual model. The placement of the masthead and all the selling lines always frames the model's face, which is a convention of magazines. As for the colour of the font, it is significant because pink has connotations of femininity, lust and desire. Additionally, the shade chosen is a lot darker, almost red, which makes it edgier and bolder. This fits with the message of Tatler being for the ambitious modern woman. The hot pink can be viewed as a power colour.

Reveal magazine is a weekly magazine produced by Hearst UK. It covers celebrity gossip, life advice (eg. on relationships, dieting) and fashion. It was first launched in 2004, with an overwhelming reader base of women -- 819,000 women vs 43,000 men. It is clear from just looking at the cover, that Reveal targets a different market from Vogue / Tatler or other high end magazines. One obvious difference would be the price. An issue of Reveal costs only 99p, compared to Tatler Magazine which costs £4.50, or even a standard magazine which costs around £1.50~ This is why it can be produced on a weekly basis. Its target audience are working class women (probably) of the struggler psychometric, who have less money to spend on magazines and luxuries. They would not be interested in the more formal, rigid and sophisticated articles of high end magazines, which they may view as pretentious. Instead, they would be attracted to the straightforward and gossipy Reveal magazine.
However, the magazine had been experiencing a steady decline in popularity since its peak in 2007, and closed their website in 2016. Finally, in September of 2018, they announced that they were discontinuing the magazine due to a 50% drop in viewership and circulation. In October they officially closed down. |
I didn't know what I wanted to do for my magazine originally. I made thumbnail drawings of different layouts, styles, genre and titles for magazines that I was considering. Although it was helpful to organise my thoughts I don't think the final product is very similar to the plan

Some sample shots I took, but I made a mistake with the camera settings and the shutter speed was too low, so some of the photos are blurry. Which is irritating.
